Well unless you’ve spent the last year living under a rock then there is no doubt you’ve already heard the numerous and never ending rumors about Apple’s next generation phone, the iPhone 5. To start off I have to say that this blog, and for that matter all of the Mac/Apple/iPhone rumor blogs don’t really know what the name will be. We can speculate that the name will be iPhone 5 but there are rumors circulating that the next generation of the popular smart phone could go by a different name, known as the iPhone 4s.
For those of you who are familer with Apple’s iPhone launches you know about how they went from the iPhone 3g and instead of jumping straight into the iPhone 4 they went with the name iPhone 3GS. The reason they did this is because they didn’t really consider the new model of phone as something that deserved an entirely new number. There were some enhancements and of course the “s” stood for speed since the device was faster and more powerful.
Fast forward to today and many people seem to think that the next iPhone won’t be called the iPhone 5 but instead the iPhone 4S and that Apple may be planning to launch the real iPhone 5 next year in harmony with the iPad 3. The advantage of doing so is that they get to launch 2 new and popular products every year at the same time and beef up quarterly sales figures for their shareholders. But the problem that it also creates is that these devices aren’t exactly cheap.
Even when you’re sucked into a contract you can still expect to pay around $200 for the iPhone and the iPad’s are almost never discounted, especially if you buy the wifi only version and can start off in the $500 range. In this economy I don’t think Apple would be able to get a wide amount of support for launching 2 products which lets face it are very similar just different sizes with their current price points. Sure the Apple loyalists will grab up as many as they can but if Apple wants to remain #1 they have to reach out beyond their base market.
So back to the next generation of iPhone, which we will go ahead and call the iPhone 5 even though we aren’t really sure what the name will be. Right now there is really no solid evidence as to what type of specs or hardware the phone will be sporting but one thing that can be ruled out right now is that it will not be a 4g phone. Yes it’s sad but true but not entirely unexpected, Apple has always had a problem with Flash because it’s such a battery hog, but 4g connections hog up even more battery power than even Flash could imagine.
Another thing we do know for sure is that Apple is working to consolidate all of it’s models into a single handset, mean that instead of having a certain phone for AT&T and then a certain phone for Verizon you’ll be able to buy a single handset and then use it on either network and if the rumors are correct you’ll be able to use it on just about any carrier in the world since it’s being designed as a “world phone”.
I don’t want to get into the boring stuff about what a world phone is or why you would want one, but it will basically open up the iPhone to other markets and carriers that didn’t have the ability to carry it in the past and yes, that includes prepaid carriers. While Apple hasn’t made any official announcements, many people expect the iphone 5 to come ready to be used on not only Verizon and AT&T but also Sprint and T-Mobile.
This isn’t such good news for the cell phone carriers but it’s very good news for consumers like you and me. Now that we have many more choices regarding our carriers the phone companies will be forced to lower their prices which will end up saving us a lot of money.
The iPhone 5 is also expected to carry a dual core processor much like the iPad 3 instead of the single core processor of the iphone 4. At first you probably won’t notice the beneifts of this since most iPhone apps aren’t really CPU intensive or resource hogs but as more and more advanced features become available to the app developers, such as Apple’s iCloud, you could see this dual core as almost being a necessity.
Memory and storage space is also expected to increase in the next model but obviously you aren’t going to get those type of upgrades for free. As for the screen, due to the whole iPhone 4s vs iPhone 5 rumor mill we still don’t know what type of screen the iPhone 5 will be rocking but so far the leaked part photos indicate that the screen will be slightly bigger but not as big as many analysts were expecting it to be.
The iPhone 5 story is constantly evolving so don’t be afraid to check back here as more and more information about the phone and it’s release date becomes available. No matter what name the next generation iPhone takes you can be sure that its going to be amazing and in true Apple form be highly desired by many people across the world.
